As a barber or stylist, you use your tools every day — so it’s essential to love the ones you’re with. Here’s are the best tools on the market in 2020 according to business coach and former salon owner, Nina Tulio.
When it comes to your tools, you need to pick the ones that you feel will enhance the quality of your service. You’re making an investment in your career and your future, so be sure to do your research.
In most cases, stylists in a salon tend to use the same tools. One stylist purchases one styling tool, everyone tries it, falls in love, and presto — the entire team has the same blow dryer or scissors. It was no different in my salon. After all, nothing is better than a testimonial from a stylist you work with every day. Plus, you can try the tool out a bit before you make the investment.
But sometimes you don’t have that resource or you just can’t help wondering if there’s something better out there for your money. From talking to many stylists over the years, my own experience with styling tools, and keeping an eye on the trends in the industry, here’s my list of my top six styling tools that I’m confident you will absolutely love.
The Best Hair Tools for Stylists and Barbers in 2020
Curling Iron: Babyliss Pro Nano Ionic 1″
This is my favorite curling iron on the planet. I have so many stylist friends that use it as well. It heats up quickly, has a heat boost button, makes the hair incredibly shiny, and gives you curls that last throughout the day. I enjoy the one-inch even on long hair because it gives the hair a more lived-in beachy wave. …And it is very reasonably priced.
Brush: Olivia Garden (All)
Stylists just love the Olivia Garden brush collection. And now they have tools too, like their new flat iron…but back to the brushes. With Olivia Garden, you have about 16 different brush styles to choose from. They have their iconic paddle brush, their round thermal brush, and their styling brushes, just to name a few. Regardless of style, the quality of each brush is on-point. I had the pleasure of having co-owner Anne, as a guest on our podcast, and her story behind the brand is truly remarkable. This company is a family-owned business that continues innovative in a growing market.
Blow Dryer: Dyson Supersonic
This blow dryer makes a lot of top styling tools lists, so it’s worth mentioning. In talking to other stylists, I’ve found that they either love or hate this dryer. It is definitely on the pricier side (coming in at a sweet $399), but stylists that love it say that it really does dry the hair so much faster and leaves it feeling soft and incredibly shiny. It’s compact in size, although when I held one, I have to say, it wasn’t as light as I expected it to be. There’s a reason it’s beloved, but I’d recommend finding a way to try one before spending the money.
Flat Iron: Amika 1″ Titanium Silk Glide Iron
Obviously, there are tons of flat iron options on the market. Ceramic and tourmaline are the two most popular. For me, my absolute favorite flat iron is the Amika 1” titanium silk glide iron. This was my go-to for years. It heats up in a flash and truly makes the hair so incredibly smooth and shiny with just one pass. It is also very lightweight and comes in some pretty cool patterns and colors, too.
Curling Wand: 1 1/4″ Hot Tools Pro
Who doesn’t love a curling wand? Well, some stylists do and some don’t. If you fall into the former category, one of the fan favorites is the 1 ¼” black gold curling wand by Hot Tools Pro. This iron heats up to 455 degrees and can hold your curl up to 45% longer. The wand is tapered, so it also creates a very lived-in look. And then there’s an automatic 2-hour shut off for your protection.
Clippers: Andiss Master Cordless Clipper
For this category, I figured I’d go straight to the expert: my friend and master barber to the stars Barry B (@thestarsbarber). His favorite clipper for 2020 is absolutely the Andis Master Cordless. Let me run down the list of amazing things this clipper has to offer: 1. Like the name suggests, it’s cordless. Of course, this is amazing, as it offers you more freedom and movement behind the chair. 2. It has up to 90 minutes of non-stop run time. 3. It’s lightweight, which is a huge plus since you will be holding it all day long.
Whether you are a new or veteran stylist or barber, it is so important to invest in your craft by purchasing in the proper tools. Take your time. Do your research and truly get some of these tools in your hands to ensure they are the right fit for you.
